The Virtual Trail section allows you to travel the Cherokee Trail from the comfort of your own home. Through photographs, maps, and descriptions of key sites, you can experience the landscape and landmarks that goldseekers and emigrants encountered as they made their way westward.
The trail begins at Fort Gibson/Tahlequah in Oklahoma and winds its way through the open prairies of Kansas, across the high plains of Colorado, and through the mountains of Wyoming before connecting with the main California Trail at Fort Bridger. Wagon ruts, swales, and cut-down ravine and river banks remain visible in many segments today.
Like a live flowing river, the trail has had cutoffs and branches that are still being explored, marked, and mapped. This section will guide you through the major segments and landmarks of the trail.
