Blackfoot Cave, situated in the valley of East Cherry Creek in southeastern Douglas County. In close proximity to the historic Cherokee Trail, Blackfoot Cave could justifiably be called the “cave on the trail,” given that numerous events of importance to Colorado’s past have occurred at the cave and nearby.  The site is currently under excavation by volunteers with the Denver Chapter of the Colorado Archaeological Society and Douglas County Historic Preservation, for the purposes of establishing the cultural history of the Blackfoot Cave site and enabling an interpretation of that history for the public.

Blackfoot Cave is a distinctive rockshelter because it has a permanent spring flowing from it. Few reliable, permanent water sources existed on the plains and human activity tended to make extensive use of dependable sources of water. Because of this, there has been extensive prehistoric and historic use of the Blackfoot Cave site over time.
